The painting “Lilac” was written in the Pavlovskoye estate, where the artist’s family lived. In this portrait gravitating to the genre, the picture preserved the charm of the first impression and the picturesque ease of writing is preserved. Kustodiev uses an extended background, actively including a landscape in the composition. Against the backdrop of a brightly lit at home and flowering lilac, the artist with love and penetration depicts the figure of a young woman with a baby in her arms. The soft lines of the silhouette, the increased sonority of the color create an atmosphere of elegant festivity in the picture, and the appearance of a loved one develops into a poetic image of a woman-mother, with his whole being associated with the flowering world of nature.
