The range of creative interests of Repin was very wide. The artist equally worried about both works on modern plots and retrospective historical topics. For example, following the order of the Committee of the Pushkin Lyceum Society, the painter, with its inherent “inquisitiveness”, writes in 1911 one after another impressive options for the picture “Alexander Pushkin at the act in the lyceum on January 8, 1815”. The sketch of the same name shows how difficult it was to subjugate the multi -figure composition with new picturesque techniques of an expressive open letter.
